ASUS to Release Two New Pocket PCs

The MyPal A716

ASUS plans to release a high-end Wi-Fi and Bluletooth equipped Pocket PC in 2004. The MyPal A716 is powered by a 400MHz XScale PXA255 processor with 64MB of RAM, with 58MB available to the user. It will run on the Windows Mobile 2003 operating system. Expansion will be via both Secure Digital/MultiMedia and CompactFlash slots. It's unclear whether it will support SDIO, however, it would seem highly likely.

The device will measure 5.3 inches long, 3.0 inches wide, and 0.7 inches thick and will weigh 6.2 ounces.

At the moment no specific release date has been announced. All that is known is that it will be sometime in 2004.

With the longer than expected lag in the release of the A620 BT model in Australia, one wonders when we will get to see this device here. Hopefully ASUS will put as much effort - or more - into marketing in Oz as they did with the basic
A620 - which was released here before it was in the US. We can only hope.

The MyPal A8100 Smart Phone/Cellular-wireless PDA

This is a particularly nifty looking device with a hinged keypad that can be swivelled out to reveal a full-sized 240 x 320 pixel screen. It will run the Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003. It will be expandable via a SD/MM card slot and come with built-in Bluetooth capability.

Currently there is no information on the battery life or the size and weight of this device. However, I am confident that it will be quite compact and light, based on ASUS' design philosophy.

Fujitsu Demonstrates Prototype Handheld with SVGA Screen

Quote:

November 7, 2003 (TOKYO) -- Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd announced that it built a prototype wireless LAN-capable compact personal digital assistant (PDA) featuring a 4-inch SVGA LCD display with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels.

Fujitsu Laboratories' prototype PDA with SVGA display
It has 802.11b wireless LAN, Bluetooth and infrared communication capabilities so that it can access directly to a LAN or virtual private network (VPN) without using any communication tool. It enables users to access PCs inside the office or home from outside, and to use data remotely.

As a compact-size PDA, it is the world's first to have a 4-inch SVGA display and capability of browsing contents for a PC, according to the company.

The field-sequential color display expresses colors by switching RGB at high speed without using color filters, which helps improve resolution levels compared with conventional PDAs. When viewing contents designed for the normal PC screen size, this will save users from frequent scrolling or viewing the entire screen in reduced size, the company said.

As it comes with a Compact Flash card socket, it is accessible for public telephone networks using a card-type PHS. Also, it is compatible with Remote Desktop, PC remote control function supported by Microsoft Corp, and VNC, a remote display system, distributed by AT&T Corp. It allows users to securely view files and operate/control applications via encrypted private network or the Internet, from outside home.

Fujitsu Laboratories plans to develop various business solutions, using this prototype compact PDA.

For example, it has an idea to connect the PDA and PCs, home gateways and network services. Also, it has plans to develop sensors of devices such as a contactless IC card and radio frequency identification (RFID) system.

Technologies such as location-information technology and user interfaces suitable for use with more high-resolution displays will also be developed, the company said.

The Asus MyPal a620 - The Fastest and Slimmest Pocket PC?

According to Brighthand, this new offering from ASUSTek is not only one of the thinnest Pocket PCs on the market, but also has the fastest 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA255 processor! It runs on the latest version of Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC.

It is supplied with 64 MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM - and breaks all the supposed rules for one-slot PPC design, in that it has a type II CompactFlash card slot, instead of the now ubiquitous Secure Digital. I personally think this is a great innovation, when one takes into account both the speed and price of SD cards.

ASUS has a reputation for building high performance PC mother boards, and they seem to have now applied their expertise to the Pocket PC. This tiny beast (12.4 x 7.6 x 1.3 cm -141g) outperforms the HP iPAQ h2215, with a Spb Benchmark index of 1573 - compared to 1146.

The good news is this PPC IS available in Australia! If fact, it arrived here well before it did in the USA. It can be purchased online from
EYO for AUD$561.00.

Although I haven't been able to test it myself, my only gripe would be that it doesn't have a thumb wheel. A Pocket PC without a this navigation device is a little like a car without a steering wheel - you can hold it in one hand but you can't drive it that way.
